updatey update

I chowed thru a few books lately. Spoilers for "Goliath" and "REAMDE" (and some other older Stephenson books) within!

First, and it was such a wonderful guilty pleasure, was Westerfeld's "Goliath". Adventure! Flying! Star crossed lovers and a daring girl dressed as a boy! It was exactly what I wanted it to be. It was high quality popcorn. It's aimed at the young adult market, and I suspect if I was reading it as a young adult, I'd love them the way some YA kids love "Twilight". Except with better source material.

Then I also read Stephenson's 'REAMDE'. I enjoyed it - it was less reminiscent of the baroque trilogy as it was of the techno-thrillers he did with his uncle back in the 1990's. And not just the Iowa part. Although parts of it definitely seemed thematically similar to 'Snow Crash'. A woman held captive for a long time among the conspiratorial bad guys (YT on the raft vs Zula in, um, most of the book)! Adventures while adrift on a boat! I was going to say 'an attempted rape foiled by unexpected violence', but that doesn't really match the dentata bit with YT in 'Snow Crash'.
