"kill bill"

i saw "kill bill". it's a good homage to all the old ultraviolent japanese and HK movies, but i don't think it's worthy of some of the hype i've been hearing. i assume the film flips into black and white and animated in places to avoid an nc17 rating.

but several times in the movie i just kept thinking "man, i don't think quentin likes women."

the action scenes were ... everything i expected plus a bag of chips.

The scenes added were done to flesh out te movie when he decided to split it up into two. It had been one LONG move but wasn't quite long enough to be two so he added some stuff.

that was about my response, too. or, as I said to the person I saw it with, "That was pretty substance free." I've loved his previous stuff, but this just left me 'well, glad someone else paid for me to see that, and it wasn't *my* money...' It'll be interesting enough on video, with both parts, but I really don't think it's worth bothering with in a theatre.

(the male I went to the movie, on the other hand, was thrilled with it. I was just kinda....bored by it.)

You're right about the B&W thing - it was done to hold an R rating. The European release is in full color. I'm sure the DVD release will be as well.

Apparently the European release was sent to the MPAA and came back NC-17. The _Globe and Mail_ had a piece about the movie yesterday (Saturday October 25), which will be online for a while. (I read the news online everyday, but we get the dead-tree version almost every weekend.)

I enjoyed it immensely, probably because I consider plot in my action movies to be nice but not strictly necessary. Reasonably clear motivation will suffice. And I just like to see women fighting well.

I did have to keep mentally repeating, "It's a genre piece. You cannot ask why they have no guns. Bad brain! NOT John Woo!"

I expected to be annoyed by having it leave off in the middle, but I thought that was done well, considering. I wasn't annoyed at all.
