okay, that was fun.

so, every once in a while, i go out to the supermarket, buy a crapload of tuna in foil packets, slim-jim snacks, goldfish crackers, cupasoup, fruit leather, and other portable nonperishable snackies. and i go thru my books or books i've picked up cheap, and then i go to books for soldiers and send off care packages to folks serving overseas. sometimes, i'll also special order stuff from amazon or something and have it shipped over there. (like for the guy in afghanistan who wanted battlestar galactica on dvd)

previously, my favorite care package was for a chick who wanted a copy of "johnny the homicidal maniac" (a comic by the guy who did invader zim).

but today, i found a request from someone in iraq who likes scifi, and mentioned that he liked the rocky horror picture show. so i sent a care package full of snacks and books and such, but also included cards, rice, toilet paper, and newspaper. and i ordered a dvd of RHPS from amazon with a gift message saying "stay safe so you can come home and do the time warp again".

that was fun.

Okay- I'm dumb.. how do I get involved. Do I go to 'be a volenteer' (sp?) and then fill out their form?

after you make an account, you have to print out their form, fill it out, and get it notarized, and mail it to them. (banks often have notary publics (the folks who notarize forms)). they apparently had problems with people misusing the address information when it was public, so they've had to get more uptight. once you mail them the form, they give you access to the "requests from soldiers/sailors/airmen/marines" parts of the web site.

I don't know where chipmunk is, but it's possible that jbsegal is a notary public, if my memory isn't playing tricks on me.

[identity profile] rmd.livejournal.com 2007-01-20 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
it would be a very long commute for chipmunck to get to jbsegal. :-)

So I learned when confirming that jbsegal is indeed a notary. But I'm never above putting people together when there's match in supply and demand. :)

*smooch*

i have to say, the idea of a tent full of military folks doing the time warp somewhere in the middle east warms my heart.

You are a very nifty person. This is, of course, only one of the reasons I love you and cherish our friendship.

Need to get organized so I can do the Books for Soldiers thingy. After I finish with the church stuff (end of month).

Hugs!

That is an astoundingly good thing to do!
