ways to make a day better -- get a voicemail that leads me to suspect there is Bad News, and it turns out there's happy news instead. (i figured someone died, but in fact there are new twins in the world and both babies and mom are all doing fine.)
My father does that to me all the time. He'll call at some bizarre time like the middle of the night and leave a message that just says "It's Dad, call me." And then instead of someone being dead, it'll be like "Hey my computer is giving me a weird error."
Sometimes I wish my answering machine could recognize messages when people are leaving "call me" messages, and deliver to the caller a little electroshock therapy. Usually I didn't answer the phone because I didn't want to talk to them in real time, so leave me a REAL message, dangit!

(A great phrase when not applied to one's own offspring.)
