I just wrote to the author, praising her lavishly. That was a really cogent analysis of everything that went wrong this season, if only because it made me feel like I wasn't the only one saying "What the fuck?"
I have to admit, though, I was one of the fooled. I thought that Spike was trying to get his chip out at the end, and that the demon tricked him.
Granted, I didn't really want to see what a chipless Spike would do, and hell, for that matter, since Buffy came back from the dead, the chip seems not to apply to her anyway.
I do think that they wrapped the season up a litle too quickly, though. One hopes that ME can reclaim their sincerity next season.
Actually, she missed one thing that they completely and bewilderingly buggered up:
Where the hell did the Satanic temple come from? One thing Buffy has never even *touched* is God and Satan; nothing has ever been Satanic in origin, and where the *hell* did that come from? It tied witchcraft right in with being devil-worshipping, and that *really* pissed me off. They've gone six seasons without drawing that line, and all of a sudden without explanation they do? WTF?

I love btVS and I really hope they make it better because I really hate sitting through bad shows with the desperate hope it will get better...
