green (or rather, brown) guilt.

quite often, after i make a pot of tea and i'm emptying out the filter basket full of tea leaves, i feel guilty for not composting my compostable waste.

*sigh*

not only do i not have much yard to use compost in, i pretty much lack space for a small composter. but still, it seems a waste of perfectly good browns.

I feel the same way. Tonight I was poking around and found out my city gives a $40 rebate for composters, too, so I really must get one. I don't have anywhere sunny to put it, but I guess it can just be a slow pile. We have a green waste bin, but I'd like to hang onto some of those good organics since I do actually buy compost right now.

Worm composting may not mind tea (if you adjust the pH with... I think it's lime) and you can get a small bin that fits under the sink. It's not smelly if you treat it right.

i'm not *certain* about tea leaves, but you can grow oyster mushrooms directly on used coffee grounds. if you like mushrooms, maybe get in touch with fungiperfecti and see if they have a kit you can use without the intervening compost step?

Worms. Worms, worms, worms. Worms are good with tea, but it isn't really food for them. Food for them is...food. Peelings, rotten veggies, and the like. Eggshells are good for your plants, which means they're good in the compost, but they break down very slowly. The wormies don't eat them, but they do like to hide in them.

Of course, even with worms, you still have to remove the completed compost periodically. But really, even if you don't have a garden, there are worse things you could do with a bucket of worm shit than to throw it on your lawn.

For just this reason, every time I trim a vegetable, I look forward to having my own real estate.
