that was one of the most singularly weird experiences of my life.

so, i got lasik. seems to have gone well. i've got a next-day followup appt with my optometrist later today, but i woke up being able to see. actually, i'm a tad farsighted at the moment, although that should fade as healing continues. i'm still spending a lot of time hanging out with my eyes closed -- i'm doing blind touchtyping of most of this entry, for instance. i'm still light-sensitive, and my eyes are easily tired, but so far, so good.

it wasn't *nearly* as clockwork orange as i expected.

and not only did they give me free sunglasses, the price had also dropped since i'd booked last october, so i saved some money, too.

also, i've got clear shields to put over my eyes when i sleep, and so i ended up fitting them in front of the bathroom mirror and made sure that the cpap mask didn't interfere, and i made a shocking discovery, what with being able to see clearly while wearing the cpap mask. i don't look at all like darth vader with the cpap mask on. with the right angle hose joint poking out of the mask, i look much more like gonzo the muppet.

I am following this story with Great Interest, as I've been contemplating lasik for myself (having been bespectacled since I was 8 years old).

[identity profile] donnad.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Until I had LASIK I had worn glasses or contacts from the age of 4.
If you qualify, do it! By qualify, I mean if your corneas are thick enough, people with thinner corneas can't have it done.

Can't recommend my experience strongly enough. My vision has now been 20/10 in both eyes for 5 years, I can very often read signs at a distance that my never- (or currently-) bespectacled friends can not.

Some people have problems, but mine has been an unmitigated success. Best expenditure of money and effort I've made on that scale, ever.

I went to Dr. Talamo (http://www.lasikofboston.com/) and highly recommend it- he's one of the best in the area.

Hah! That is a hilarious realization. At least, I chortled.

It's a miracle! Sing it with me, brothers and sisters! Amen!

[identity profile] lil-brown-bat.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if lasik was anything like my cataract surgery, they give you this anesthetic that makes you just...not...care. So, yes, it is like ACW, you just don't care that it is.

[identity profile] unclebooboo.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I've probably got ICL's plus reading glasses in my future- the opthamologists have stopped trying to sell me Lasik since my Rx is so extreme. Here's to a quick recovery and much improved vision for you.

Oh I hated those plastic eye shields. but they did keep me from scratching. Your eyes will itch like crazy for a couple weeks and until the flaps heal a bit you can't rub them.

The funny thing is I tend to scratch in my sleep, I have scratched myself bloody without waking up because of hives. So when my eyes itched the shields kept me from scratching, but after a couple days I would try to remove them in my sleep to rub my eyes, ripping the medical tape off my face would wake me up and I would have the shield half off by the time I realized what I was doing.

We keep looking at it every year or three, but the price has been skerry. If you don't mind me asking, what did it run you?

[identity profile] rmd.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
originally they quoted $3K/eye, but it dropped to about $2500/eye.

heh, i was a terrible patient. they put these funny shields on me when i first left the doctors office. i went straight home and just passed out with the shields on. however, as soon as i woke up i tore them of and went straight out to a party. i never wore the shields again.

[identity profile] rmd.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, but party animal.

Welcome to the world of the sighted.

And thank you for helping to debug this process before I need to go through it myself, when my eyes start to fail in my old age. :)

[identity profile] rmd.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
what's that, sonny? i can't hear you in my dotage. don't make me hobble over there and kick your ass with my cane. also, get off my lawn you damn young punks.

[identity profile] babasyzygy.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, it's not the same process as for age-related sight degradation.

[identity profile] dfjdejulio.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Phoey! Okay, quick, someone with good vision, get old and help debug *that* process.

But still, thanks for debugging the process Nora may use to correct *her* vision.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what baby boomers are for - they fund the refinement of age extension and life improvement technologies for us.

[identity profile] rmd.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
oh hell yeah.

[identity profile] marith.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Glad it seems successful and you are doing okay.

Does this mean that Clauclauclaudia is a chicken?

[identity profile] rmd.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
well, she is younger than me. does that make me a chickenhawk?

[identity profile] klingonlandlady.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
ok, now we can start calling you Gonzo and Camilla :)

[identity profile] babasyzygy.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
