that was one of the most singularly weird experiences of my life.
so, i got lasik. seems to have gone well. i've got a next-day followup appt with my optometrist later today, but i woke up being able to see. actually, i'm a tad farsighted at the moment, although that should fade as healing continues. i'm still spending a lot of time hanging out with my eyes closed -- i'm doing blind touchtyping of most of this entry, for instance. i'm still light-sensitive, and my eyes are easily tired, but so far, so good.
it wasn't *nearly* as clockwork orange as i expected.
and not only did they give me free sunglasses, the price had also dropped since i'd booked last october, so i saved some money, too.
also, i've got clear shields to put over my eyes when i sleep, and so i ended up fitting them in front of the bathroom mirror and made sure that the cpap mask didn't interfere, and i made a shocking discovery, what with being able to see clearly while wearing the cpap mask. i don't look at all like darth vader with the cpap mask on. with the right angle hose joint poking out of the mask, i look much more like gonzo the muppet.

If you qualify, do it! By qualify, I mean if your corneas are thick enough, people with thinner corneas can't have it done.

Some people have problems, but mine has been an unmitigated success. Best expenditure of money and effort I've made on that scale, ever.
