the new dvd recorder is hooked up and life is good.

i'm archiving episodes of "invader zim" off the tivo now.

for time-shifting purposes alone, of course. :-)

So...

i suspect the UI on the next generation will be better. but in terms of record quality, it's fine. i haven't tried it on the "compress as much as possible" setting, so i don't know how bad the compression artifacts will be if i do that.

but so far, i'm loving it.

if you buy one, do take note that there are two non-compatible standards for recording (although supposedly a "finalized" disk will play on most dvd players). dvd-r and dvd+r. i've gone with +r.

Details please. Which did you buy, where, how much? What sucks about it and what rules? Where are you getting blank media, and for how much?

philips dvdr985. i picked it up for under $600 from mpsuperstore (i got them off of pricescan.com). i haven't figured out where a good source for dvd+r's is. i think the 3-packs are going for about $10. but i suspect i can find larger quanties for cheaper.

things that suck: the ui is clunky and reeks of "first generation gear". on the other hand, i can burn stuff to dvd's, which is so fucking cool.

Microcenter has 25 packs of Fuji DVD+Rs for $70, or $2.80/disc

Mmm... what would I have to do to charm you enough to burn lil' ol' me copies?

Also, how far along are you? I have yet to find any episodes online after "Walk For Your Lives" and even that's only in RealGrainy format.

if someone had their old super8 home movies burned onto a dvd, can your new machine make copies of that dvd?
