what a wonderful weekend full of sloth with just enough bits of industriousness that i didn't feel like i'd completely wasted the time.

a bit of cleaning. a bit of organizing. i even unpacked a couple of boxes i hadn't unpacked yet (note i moved here in 11/01, so it's about fuckin' time). i didn't finish painting the tv room, but i did get my ladder back so i can get the corners of the room painted.

i watched several movies with claudia -- "american history x" and "primal fear" (i'd seen the former but not the latter before) as part of the edward norton film-a-thon. watched other things that were laying around on the tivo. my dvd burner seems to have crapped out -- i'll need to call phillips and say "hey! wtf! give me an rma number or tell me where to bring it to have it fixed!"

claudia and i also watched the hbo movie of and about "the vagina monologues". it's some discussion with eve ensler about the monologues, interview segments with other women, and ensler's performances of several of the monologues. good stuff.

i started some bread dough on saturday (from a recipe that suggests letting both the sponge and the fully mixed dough spend at least 8 hours each hanging out in the fridge for long ferment times) and made a tasty baguette on sunday and turned the rest into pizza dough on monday. i don't know if it was the dough or the high temperature (i preheated the oven to over 500 degrees and cooked the pizza at about 450) or just luck, but it was the best pizza crust i've made so far. putting gruyere and garlic on it in addition to alfredo sauce and mozzarella may have been a bad idea, though. the bite of the grueyere and the bite of the garlic kind of clash.

i was on call saturday noon thru sunday noon and i spent part of sunday morning working on stuff. then monday, i ended up in the data center (which gave me an excuse to grab my ladder back) and figured i'd stop at the target store next door to buy cheerios for claudia on the way home. bad mistake -- i ended up leaving with a big cart-load of stuff including a cool box to put my mail in (since i seem to always pile it on the corner of the desk in the foyer, i'll put a container there for it to ... er ... contain it) a storage box for sweaters and light bulbs and cat litter and various other assorted stuff.

books:
i finished one book (the water in between by kevin patterson about a canadian guy who dealt with the end of a short intense romance in the mid 90's by buying a boat and sailing (with no prior sailing experience) to tahiti and back with several different folks, finish up the journey sailing singlehanded. and i started another -- the da vinci code by dan brown, which my brother johnd has been eager for me to read. i'm enough of a conspiracy wonk that i'm pretty sure i know what the plot twist is. :-) it's reminding me of tim powers' declare which i should dig up and loan to john. i had started them: adventures with extremists recently, but claudia started reading it so i've been letting her finish while i work my way thru other stuff. other books i'm partyway thru are The Story of Rats: Their Impact on Us, and Our Impact on Them which is exactly what it sounds like it is, and a voyage for madmen, about the first singlehanded sailboat race around the world.
