yesterday, i was planning on doing some stuff around the house, then hitting a party/bbq. unfortunately, after doing a bit of yard work to tame the worst of the offending weeds, then transplanting some of my seedlings (lots of basil, two oregano, and one mint - which got its own separate pot) into planters, then discovering that home despot was open so i could get what i needed to fix the front stairs... i mixed up some quick-set concrete and (hopefully) fixed the front steps (some of the bricks had come off -- the guy who owned this house before me apparently thought he was a passable handyman-mason or knew someone who did. he was wrong.) well, actually, i mostly fixed them. i ran out of cement for the last two bricks. i'll see how the other ones hold up and then either mix up enough to fix the last two bricks or mix up enough to re-do all of them.

so, after that, i sat around for a while loafing, then showered, then loafed in front of "sports night" dvd's with claudia. at which point we realized that we were sliding into greath sloth and weren't going to go anywhere. we ran out of sports night and watched a bit of the pre-concert coverage. then we settled in the air conditioned bedroom to listen to the hatch shell concert live on the radio before falling off to sleep.

i was overwhelmed by cynicism at some of the more blatant "support the troops" stuff because it feels like astroturf instead of grass roots, knowing that the government was calling up cities and towns and suggesting the theme at the same time as the government was cutting pay and benefits for our military troops. the bright glossy professionally printed "support the troops" signs i saw gave me the same feeling. bah. i guess "support the troops" is different from "pay the troops". (that link above leads to an army times editorial, btw.)

today's supposed to be really hot and humid. perhaps this will be a good day to see an air conditioned movie.

so, i've got one of those george foreman grills. they're pretty cool. i was making some tasty brunch (burger for me and i was splitting some sausage with claudia who was also engaging in cheerios (which do not go so good on the grill)). in case you're unfamiliar with the basic foreman grill design, it's a sloped grill so grease drips off into a removable grease-trap thing that sits in front of the grill.

well, when things were nearly done, i knocked the grease trap onto the floor. i jumped fast enough that i didn't get spattered with hot grease. so i put the othe grease trap in place and started cleaning up from the spill. when i was done cleaning up, i proceeded to spill the other grease trap onto the floor too.

stupid gravity waves. although i suppose it's better than no gravity and the grill producing free-floating blobs of grease that would float around the house and spatter you when you weren't expecting it. also, the cats might be really annoying in zero g.

NEARLY NOW!
