home machine is sufficiently up and functional again, with a new kernel (i did a not-entirely-successful upgrade to fedora core 3 -- it keeps horking at one part of the install (some httpd-related package) and says it might be hardware problems, a full disk, or media problems. but the media tests okay during the "test media" part of the install, and there's plenty of disk space. so, er, i have no idea.)
the current machine is a circa-2000 dual proc PIII machine, which is certainly servicable for the task, but i'm thinking perhaps i'll take this opportunity to replace it with something new and then poke around at turning this into an openbsd-based firewall box or a drawbridge filter box or something.
now i can start writing up my excellent weekend, tho. :-)
