katrina, two years on
Aug. 30th, 2007 06:59 pmseveral years ago, i made my only trip to the gulf of mexico. i only spent a weekend on the gulf coast, in the long beach/biloxi area of MS. i was kind of sick, so i wasn't up to doing a day trip to new orleans. but the long beach area was lovely -- my folks were renting a house right along the road that runs along the coast, and i had gone down to visit them there. i sat and watched the gulf of mexico and had a very pleasant time.
my understanding is that the long beach area is pretty much gone, now, as of two years ago.
i haven't been back yet.

Date: 2007-08-30 11:21 pm (UTC)The beach is still there.
Many of the houses and buildings were damaged or destroyed.
I was there in April, the second time I'd been back since I moved away 2 months after the storm. Driving down 90 was a little odd. The debris was gone, for the most part, and scenes of life and normalcy vied for attention with evidence of the destruction. I was caught between thinking how much farther there was to go to be rebuilt, and being amazed at how much progress has been made.
If you have reason to go that way, or to New Orleans, go. They can use the business.
