i had plans for this evening. they were foiled.

wait, let me start over. while i've never met the guy in person and i'm sure he's very nice, i find cory doctorow's web persona somewhat annoying. in that sort of self-promoting "WEB TWO POINT OH IS SOOO COOL. ALSO, LOOK, THIS THING LOOKS LIKE A GOATSE! WE LOVE STEAMPUNK!" kind of way that makes me find boingboing a little too injokey insular for my tastes at times. (metafilter is also injokey insular, but it's an open (well, $5) platform so it's an injokey community rather than a bully pulpit)

but people kept telling me that his new book "little brother" is really good. even people who also snark about cory doctorow.

so i went to the web site and poked around a bit and decided to download it and give it a read some time - maybe load it onto my pda, something like that.

so i downloaded it and opened the file to be sure it was all correct and that it wasn't part 1 or 75 or something that would end up annoying me when i realized i was stuck at a cliffhanger. and i started reading it a bit.

that was a little over 3 hours ago.

i'm done with the book now.

it's really a fun fast read. buy it or just go check it out

yeah, there's a lot of verbiage at the beginning.
search for "Chapter 1" or "I'm a senior at Cesar Chavez high"

it's a fun book -- it seems like it would teach kids how to think about security and the bypassing thereof.

I've been trying to buy a copy every time that I happen by a new book store, but they always seem to be sold out (and yes, I've figured out that its shelved with the "young adult" fiction...)

Woohoooo!!

I want the book far, far more than I want to talk to Cory Doctorow. *laugh*

Merlin Mann had a great twitter post, lost forever I'm sure now in the depths of Twitter.... it went something like: "Cory Doctorow has a new book out? I had no idea! Why didn't he post to Boing Boing about it??"

I thought the ending was rather lame. Then again, I've thought that about his other books too. Fun quick read otherwise, though.

Thanks for the link! I heard him do a reading of the first part of this some time ago and was captivated. Now I can finish the story!
