Well. That was startling.

The toilet in my house had a sudden and unanticipated loss of hold tank structural integrity.

Happily, it was the upper tank that broke -- so the floodwater was clean water -- and i got to the shutoff valve quickly. The water didn't escape the bathroom, and every larger-than-a-facecloth towel in my house is now on the floor of the bathroom or cycling thru the laundry (since while the water was clean, the bathroom floor certainly was not).

Well, it's been awhile since I have seen a toilet explode. Quite impressive.

Fortunately you were home; such a failure while away would be a serious disaster. Kind of like the washing machine losing it's mind here and flooding over, glad I was around for it.

Whew...

That would be quite startling, and was much better than it could have been!

Exploded View, indeed! Man oh man. I'm hoping you were there when it happened and therefore it was not overwhelmingly bad as opposed to it happening while you were at the office and thereby flooding all kinds of things and places that would have made it more problematic.

Any idea what caused the failure? Toilet tanks don't normally break like that.

I wonder if the flow would have been fast enough to trigger these hoses to shut off?

This has to be the most bizarre household disaster I've
ever heard of. Thank you for sharing it.

I love that you're the only person who's used "homerepairdisaster" as a tag. Add me to the chorus who are glad you were home and able to deal.

WTF?!?!

They just do that sometimes? Toilet tanks just spontaneously combust?!?!

I have *never* heard of that happening. WTF?!?!

Also, appropo of nothing, but while I'm thinking of it, I misplaced a chunk of solid sodium while visiting with some friend recently, and can't remember who it was. If you hear of anyone finding some, let me know? ;)

My younger son has a tendancy to "throw" himself down on things, rather than sit down; this slams chairs into walls, the sofa into the piano, dislodges the toilet seat, etc. I'll have to send him here for a good look, as a deterrent for this behavior.

I can only imagine the yowl that would erupt if this happened while you were in the process of sitting down on the toilet... All that cold water wooshing around you while you had your mind on other matters...

Eep! Glad it wasn't worse. Also... wow! Never seen a tank fail that way.

eek! that was impressive... I've had a bolt rust out of the bottom of the tank and cause a slow leak out the bottom, but, wow!
