it's the last sunday in october. this is a time of year when it's not unheard of for there to be snow on the ground. instead, today was lovely, sunny, with temperatures up in the 60's.

perfect day for a sail around boston harbor.

and we even made it thru the hull gut without benefit of a motor.

More specifically, the guy who runs BHSC has a single orphan Sonar in his daysailing fleet that hasn't gotten much love lately, so he said "it's a boat! it should be sailed!", and offered a really, really nice price for a 2008 membership to sail just that one boat, and I said "sure!" The club folds up shop at the end of October, and I was actually planning on sailing come hell or high water, but it ended up being a really utterly lovely day to be out anyway.

I'm a bit shy of going too far with neither lights nor motor (the Mass Bay breeze is quite reliable about crapping out in the late afternoon), and we had a bad period quite a way out on the backside of Peddocks Island when things didn't look good at all, but a quite nice breeze filled in again from the west and we easily finished the somewhat ambitious loop before sunset even though we didn't really get rolling until noon.

That is awesome, the deal on the Sonar. I miss BHSC a lot.

Now he's pushing 2009 Sonar plus B-fleet Soling access for $300. (Price good through the end of October; price unknown but presumably higher after that.) (Link to the various offers is over here (http://bostonharborsailing.com/bhspecials.html).) It's not peanuts, but compared to any other way I know of to get onto saltwater under my own authority, it's a rockin' deal.

That sounds absolutely joyous and peaceful somehow at the same time. Nicely done!

Awesome. I've only managed the Hull Gut without motor once, and that was on such a windy day we tacked something like 40 times. It was "ugh" at the time but it makes a good story later. :)

Yay sailing!!!!
