the remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is coming out soon. i have heard rumors that it's made some changes from the original. which made me curious about the origins of the original. i found the story upon which "The Day the Earth Stood Still" was based ("Farewell to the Master", by Harry Bates) on the web and just read it the other day.

it's different from the movie

also, while hanging out with i_leonardo and the duck last nite, finding lots of ways to *not* do awesome etching and a few ways that worked, i discovered that the duck was unfamiliar with united nuclear. so, in the interests of sharing the awesome, i wanted to point out United Nuclear as your source on the web for aerogel, terrifyingly strong magnets (no, seriously, these are fucked up dangerous strong), trinitite, and radioactive ore.

and for less terrifyingly strong magnets, and other cheap weird stuff, including pretty good prices on borosilicate lab glass, check out american science and surplus.

Bless you, Regis. I had been feeling down about not enough getting enough surreal in my diet, but not any longer. You are doing God's work, I just hope you know that.

And I think your icon needs to replace the Citgo sign in Kenmore Square: a reminder that, as the manholes explode around us and panels in our tunnels smite us from above, we remain ever calm and prepared for things worth losing our shit about.

I found out about that movie by accident. A commercial was playing on the TV when I walked past, and I heard this one syllable grunt, turned to the TV and asked "was that Keanu?"

Huh, handy.

My brother was looking for some radioactive samples to test his old Geiger counter with.

I prefer K&J Magnetics for neodymium magnets. FYI.

I didn't know regular people could by Aerogel at all! That's sweet. And I have bought so many awesome things from AS&S over the years.

I got my terribly strong magnets from out-of-warranty hard drives.
