Wow thanks so much for this pointer! As someone who delights in learning about obscure bits of history, and especially how said obscure bits dove tail with other larger bits of history, this is a treasure trove.

This sent me on a Webly treasure-hunt for background factual information on a novel I read in college called "And then we heard the thunder", by John Oliver Killens, which I did not especially like, novelistically, but which was largely about the author's experiences in the army in WWII, and a shooting war that broke out in Australia between white and black US troops stationed there. Seems to have been the Townsville/Queensland riots. Information is scarce because I think neither side feels it reflects well upon them; few have posted fond memories of intramural race riots on Allied soil, as far as I can tell.
