lj is on the rocks, having just trashed a big chunk of the tech folks.

[livejournal.com profile] bryant has a post with useful resources for archiving your journal.

ETA: to be clear, i don't think lj is going to fall over dead tomorrow. or even this week. but if you've been tempted to archive your journal, this might be a good time to do it.

Crap! And I *just* figured out how to use the S2 style system.

Ah well, looks like I just have to invite everyone to elbows.

*nod* True. I just reserved it, if things go totally bad maybe we could set up a SA system on one of the domains.

Interesting thought: Things go bad, solution is to fix it ourselves. Sometimes I forget who we are.

Thanks for the pointer. LJbook is already oversubscribed.

mmmm, python.
i'm not crazy about the way it saves all your entries as individual files named serially, rather than named with some useful date convention (WTF?) but non-coders can't be choosers i suppose.

...except it appears the script also doesn't grab comments. sad.

Oh, that's losing. ljarchive grabs comments, but it seems to be Windows-only and I'm not sure how to extract data from it in bulk.

ljdump grabs comments, in the C-### files parallel to the L-### files.

Yes, I've noticed this, just now. For some reason it grabs all entries, then all comments, rather than entry+comments the way ljarchive does.

Examining the XML slightly it's also a bit backward in that it puts the comment body first then the meta-information such as who the commenter was. But that's fixable.

(Stack implementation, anyone?)

It's dumping comments for me; it just does them all after all the entries, and it's not clear if it attaches them to their parent entries.

If I fix that (or dates, because yeah, why not give them sensible names?), I will post a link to my own version.

yeah -- since i have 3600 entries i didn't wait around long enough to see it start to dump comments too :)

that would be awesome :)

So where do we go from here? It would be great if someone with a bunch of tech saavy could say "Everyone jump over here" so we don't split off into 75 kergillion different blogs. Or maybe it doesn't matter these days, with RSS etc.

The coolest thing would be for another blog company to see this as an opportunity and offer an easy way to transfer all entries and comments over to their archives...maybe even offer an intro sale for those who like more options. Anyone know who to poke for that?

Well, bugger! Hopefully they'll give us sufficient warning before closing the whole thing down. >:-P I bet there are going to be a lot of people who bought lifetime memberships that are going to be PISSED.

I got mine long enough ago that I think I broke even, but I'd still be awfully pissed. Brad never should have sold out. heh.

If I had a stock option for every time I've seen this scenario play out in the high tech industry... (ok, so I've only seen that precise scenario once, but I've witnessed personally or from the sidelines 3 acquisitions and/or child-parent company relationships and none of them ended well for anyone involved)
