but pretty much everyone local on lj has mentioned the ice.

while the cold sucks a whole lot, as long as i don't need to do a lot of walking outside, i generally prefer it to the oppressive gray in seattle. this was the time of year that always got to me out there -- it was STILL DARK ALL THE TIME. whereas today it's bright and sunny with a cloudless sky, and the light is reflecting off of all the frozen snow.

they just don't make yaktrax that can handle those clouds.

It's dark all the time in Seattle? Meep.

I haven't mentioned the ice because I want to expunge it from my memory.

It's dark aLL THE TIME. It's horrible. Apart from the fact that our published sunrise is at 7:37 and our sunset is at 5:05, you have to realize that we're between two mountain ranges that artificially raise our horizon -- so we're looking at the beginning of darkness at about 4:45 and the end of gloom at about 8 AM. Then there's the fact that we have grey, leaden, low overcast clouds, all the time. Also it never really stops raining, and also it never really starts raining. moisture just seeps out of the sky in a continuous moistening.

then add in the fact that the majority of our trees are evergreens, and therefore still absorbing sunlight -- and the fact that at 47 degrees north the sun doesn't get that high in the sky to begin with.. .

I get some of that late-sunrise-early-sunset, since I live in the Berkshires -- hills that aren't very tall, but are steep and close -- but as rmd said, it's rare to get that kind of low overcast in winter. When we do, it's a snowstorm, and it moves on through -- you just don't get any five-day snowstorms. So, while our days are about as short as yours, and the cold is more severe, the winter is probably easier to take.

I have a brother who lives in Colorado, north of Berthoud, and people from here are always surprised when I tell them how much warmer it is there on the average winter day. Yes, they're higher in altitude, but they're also a lot farther south and they get a lot more sun. Visiting him in March is always great -- we drive up into the mountains and ski in the morning, come back down in midafternoon and play tennis. Heh.

yeah, but it only snows every couple of years, and you don't have to shovel the rain. (usually)

I've come to the conclusion that cold and windy is what I really hate. I've gotten to the point that going for a 10 mile run with temperatures in the teens is no big deal, but the same run at 30 degrees with a 10 mph wind is a real pain.

I do like the sunny days. The ice is a bitch, though. I don't mind it when people successfully keep the sidewalks clean.

I was not well yesterday and worked from home. It was SO BRIGHT in the house because of sunlight and reflected snow. I didn't feel too awesome physically but emotionally that was really good.
