a phrase i recently encountered that kind of sums up a lot of stuff regarding geek social skills (and the difference between theory and practice):

Har! But in much of geekly life, there are few rewards for charisma. Excepting for one's love life, I think. (The old engineer joke ends, "If you took the knot out of the rope, it would work better." -- An engineer is a guy you pay to tell you that the bridge is going to fall down, no matter how much you want it to hold up.)

There are plenty of rewards. They are simply not obvious to a lot of folk.
