[livejournal.com profile] sparkymonster's twitter feed pointed me at Steam-Powered: Lesbian Steampunk Stories, so I checked it out. I was delighted to discover that not only was it full of yummy lesbian goodness, it was also specifically curated to be Anti-RaceFail and has lots of things that are *not* just the British Empire reimagined. I'm partway through the first story which includes an alternate history of Haiti with a post-revolution Haitian spy in New Orleans working with a Creole woman. Yay! It's fun and I haven't even gotten to the sexytimes parts yet.

checked it out from where?

My local library doesn't have this book, nor any of its affiliates. (Imagine my surprise...)

"Checked out" as in "investigated". As in downloaded the Kindle edition, I do believe. ;-)

At first blush, it struck me as odd that someone would write about Victorian Britain without racist imperialism. Sorta like writing about it without lung-etching smog. But I'm old for science fiction set in the past; if you're going to imagine serious computing devices in that era, why not give them the social system we think they should have had?
