There's an old Market Basket shopping cart near my house on Stickney Ave, Somerville. It showed up in my driveway Sunday night or Monday morning Saturday night or Sunday morning, and now it's on the sidewalk. All four wheels work - it doesn't have one of the 'boot' things that some newer carts have to keep it from rolling outside of its appointed parking lot.

If nobody takes it before Weds nite/Thurs morning, I assume one of the folks walking around collecting bottles or driving around collecting scrap metal will pick it up.

If it's marked as belonging to MB, then it's their property. If your purpose is just to get it off your lawn, they'll likely come and get it if you tell them it's there. Shopping carts like that are worth enough to make it their while.

[livejournal.com profile] bikergeek more or less beat me to this, but a loose shopping cart is virtually certain to be stolen property, and it seems to me that the right thing to do is help the owner get it back.

I actually notified the city as soon as I noticed it, on Sunday. There's a great "notify us of potholes and graffiti and other similar public annoyance stuff" program they have - I have practically made a hobby of reporting traffic lights that have blown lights.

(looking back, I had my days confused - it showed up Sat night or Sun morning - I remember that the city offices were closed, so it couldn't have been Monday.)
