simple pleasures

so, i've been living here for, what, 10 months. and of *course* i'm even less unpacked than i've been in any other house/apartment i've moved into.

well, i've been doing a gradual jihad against the pile of boxes in the front room (my goal is to have it become usable space in time for a brunch i'm having in a few weeks) and this morning i unearthed a big pile of t-shirts!

i'm so pleased!

Save me from the t-shirts!

I believe that the total volume of my t-shirts is around the same as the total volume of all the rest of my clothing put together. I don't know what to do about this. I used to buy them all the time as souvenirs of concerts, places, etc, so I really don't want to get rid of them. OTOH, I don't wear them very often- most not at all. A quilt is not the answer, as it would take dozens of quilts to use up all of them and they'd take up more space than the shirts, anyway.

Having used them to pack the fragiles and kitchen stuff, there is now a double 4-foot pile on the kitchen table waiting to go somewhere.

A friend of mine who found himself in a similar situation took all the old T-shirts that he had reminiscences from, and photographed them one-by-one. Then he felt free to give the whole pile away to charity.

Personally, I'll happily take a pile of predominantly white cotton T-shirts from time to time to turn into paint rags. (Not so good on the preserving memories front, though).

I have considered the photography route, maybe taking a picture of me actually wearing them, too. (I've thought about this as a general strategy for getting rid of stuff. I could fit a whole house onto one CD-ROM!) But paint rags?! Many of these are very nice shirts (and almost none are worn out) that I'd love to wear if I wore big t-shirts- it's just that I don't. Most of them aren't white, anyway, you paint hussy!

I moved into this house in May of 1999. There are still six boxes left to unpack. Augh!
