so, last night, we decided to make a big batch of annie's mac and cheese. i had been making my way through a case of the stuff i bought at costco.

so, i left claudia on shell-cooking patrol while i headed downstairs to the basement to look for a book (which i could not find, even though i'm sure i saw it there recently... *sigh*). claudia came downstairs and hemmed and hawed a bit about not being sure where my boundaries are and whether or not i'd want to know, and this is about when i said "tell me! tell me!"

turns out, when she put the shells into the boiling water, a couple of little mealworm casings floated to the top. i was kind of squicked.

so we tossed that batch and carefully sifted thru another few boxes worth of annie's shells, and found no evidence of infestation. so we boiled up more water, put in the shells.... and a couple of little casings floated up to the top of the pot. she decided to cook up and eat the shells anyways (figuring, hey, it's just casings, everything look okay, and hey, boiling, right?).

by the time they were cooked, i ended up joining in.

mmmmmmmm. shells and tasty cheese.

maybe this post should be named "an exercise in adjusting my squick-point"...

the *only* thing i've found them in was the annie's. and the boxes looked undisturbed. i haven't seen anything anywhere else in the kitchen indicating grain moths.

i'm hopeful for now. but i may have to do some poking around and investigating before declaring it to have been box-specific.

They're just bugs. They don't eat much. :-)

But seriously, if there's only 2 or 3, skim them off the top while the water's boiling, and you'll never know they where there.
