claudia and i were curling up to go to sleep last night, just chatting, and ended up talking about the panama canal, and how it works (locks on either side, and an elevated lake in between that's higher than both oceans), and she needed to get out of bed to fact-check *right then*.

after much keyboard clicking and mouse clicking sound, she came back full of information and then we could go to sleep.

mmmm. geek love.

So learning about the slope of repose. Made you all go to sleep?

How odd. I was up until 1am last night researching Panama Canal stuff. (Operational rather than infrastructural, though.) I'd really like to go through it someday, but $600 is a bit much for a lark...

Having done canal boating in England a few years ago, I had a basic idea of how the Panama Canal works. However, my dad clearly took great nerdly glee in traversing it on a cruise ship earlier this year and described it to me in great detail. :) Seems the canal is only a few feet wider than most of the cruise ships that go through it, and that holding lake at the top is enormous. Takes about 8 hours to cross to the other side, IIRC.

Andrea and I do this too. A sleep-over would require a fat pipe.
