so, i saw my shrink today, and we were talking about stuff that sucks when you're a kid, like getting picked on by other kids, and the frustrating tendancy of adults to say "oh, this won't matter to you when you're grown up" and i looked at her and said, as an aside, "which is demonstrably untrue, since i'm paying however much an hour to talk about it with a professional right now..."

I think part of it is a sense of helplessness on the part of the adults. Even knowing the pain from personal experience does not help me make it less painful for the students I work with. I try hard to appreciate the depth of the problem, but there's still very little that I can do to stop it or make it better.
