i had an episode of "poor impulse control". see, just a couple of days ago i found out that foxwoods had started up with relatively-low-buy-in weeknight evening poker tournaments again. (they hadn't had them for quite a while this year after what i'm told was a near-riot when popularity exceeded capacity.)

so after finishing up with the foot doctor yesterday and finding out that yes, my foot is healed, i decided to celebrate by driving south to foxwoods and entering a $100 poker tournament. ($80 into the prize pool, $20 fee paid to foxwoods.)

it started at 8pm. around about 930 it finally percolated thru my head that gosh, if i do well and actually bust-out in the money, i won't be finishing up until 1am. which meant getting home around 3am. and that was if i just barely made the money (it paid to 30 places).

that was the stupid part.

the clever and lucky part was that i didn't just make the money, i took second place out of 230 entrants. which netted me quite a tidy sum of money. between the amount of money in my pocket being a known quantity to a whole lot of peole and the fact that i was still gimping around in the velcro-shoe-cast thing and the fact that it was 2:30 in the morning, i decided i was just a trifle nervous walking out to my car alone and i asked the folks to get me a security escort. and they did, so a nice very large man walked me to my car and then i drove home listening to bhangra VERY VERY LOUDLY for a while.

i was also clever by switching from hot chocolate to coffee-based drinks around midnight so i was caffeinated enough to stay awake for the drive. i was just starting to feel the raggedy edge of fatigue by the time i got home at 4:30. i got to sleep by 5 and was up around 8:30, so i had enough sleep to be functional albiet a bit slow all day today. and now i'm going to sleep.

woohoo! very nicely done.

I feel i'm sort of getting out of the woods on my poker skills. A couple nickel games i've been in lately I've actually been doing well in. I tihnk it's book time now and a bunch of reading to avoid the over-confident problem.

Any recommendations?

a good intro book is lee jones' "winning low limit hold'em". 2+2 publishing has just put out a new "small stakes hold'em" book that i haven't read but i've heard some good things about. i haven't read sklansky's "hold'em poker" book, but he's good. i enjoyed his "hold'em poker for advanced players" that he did with mason malmuth. for a more general look at poker (not just hold'em), sklansky's "theory of poker" is a good read. if you want no-limit, definitely read doyle brunson's section on no limit in "super/system". (i think there's a new edition of that book that just came out -- i have no idea if anything is different in it.)
