I find it interesting how few are from that whole section that had the states colored red in the last election.

Well,this probably has more to do with population density than anything else.
It might be interesting to see the same thing done on a population-density-topographic map, rather than a straight geographic one.

Other annoying things about this presentation:

1. The icons cast shadows. This gives a visual notion of more casualties than the data is actually trying to display.
   
2. The map really needs an intermediate scale.
   
3. The script running the display ate my computer's brain, and I had to abort it.

Other than that, it is indeed a damning and sad presentation. I cannot agree when the president claims "It's worth it".

Well, it's worth it to *him*, however that's because he has nothing really to lose in this.

It would however be interesting to have a scatter plot on the states to show which ones have people dying based on votes in the last election.

Why? If deaths came disproportionately from Red States, would you claim they "deserved it"? If deaths came disproportionately from Blue States, would you claim Bush did that on purpose?

Of course.

Besides, it's nice to know these sorts of things. Whenever something happens in the name of patriotic fevor, or the goodness of someone's heart it's always nice to know who is benefiting and who is paying for the music.

actually I'd like to see it based on income levels too -- given the furor in So Cal (and other places) about how heavily the military recruits from low income areas.
