many folks have talked about sending letters to their past selves.

apparently, this meme goes around in a big way in about 10 years, because i just got a letter from myself in 10 years.

some of the contents:
1. stick with it. really. it's better than not.
2. floss more.
3. be nicer to yourself.
4. keep yourself more open to new things.
4a. when you think things are sucking a lot, often it just means that you're operating with blinders on.

Speaking of flossing more, I've always hated that myself; I've got very big hands and very tightly-packed teeth, and have just never had much luck using floss wrapped around my fingers in the traditional manner. I finally found a new product a year or so ago, though, that makes flossing just as easy as brushing: the Reach Access Flosser (http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/000554.php). Essentially, it's a handle shaped like a dental tool or high-end toothbrush, into which you snap single-use flossing heads. The flossing heads are shaped like a 3/4-inch "D", with the floss being the straight edge and the handle snapping into the middle of the plastic that makes up the curve. The floss head snaps cross-ways onto the end of the handle, making it trivially easy to position the floss in your mouth and push it down between your teeth. Highly recommended!

Thanks future rmd, that's good advice.
I'd be even more impressed though by advice like "at 10:15 AM on Sept 15, 2005-DON'T step off the curb downtown without looking both ways. Trust me on this! Oh, and that same day... Meadow Muffin to win in the 3rd race."

heh. indeed.

i am reminded of an interesting book i read, "Replay" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/068816112X), where a guy ends up going back and waking up in his own body years before, several times. one thing that makes perfect sense is that eventually he figures out to memorize dates and flights for particularly bad plane crashes he might run the risk of being on.

Why is it of no surprise to me, whatsoever, that your future self would find the way to get that to you? :) And did she use PGP encryption?

Also, if you happen to wake up in a really weird room with a guy named "Al", don't worry... Scott Bakula is just making sure you DO floss.

Ahh, future to present. Not past to present.

For some reason, I read "future" and thought "past."

Which brings up an interesting twist on the "Back to the Future Part III" motif. What if you wrote yourself (or anyone else for that matter) a letter to be delivered in the future? Say, a husband-to-be writes his fiancee a letter of love to be delivered in 25 years. Then, she's re-married to someone else, receives the letter, and goes into emotional turmoil. Well, maybe that's a bad example.

Mine just said "Be careful where you sit." Honestly it's making me kind of nervous.
