mmmm. tasty media.

book:
finally read powers' "last call". moral of the story: never play assumption out on a houseboat on the lake. i do like this sort of magic-stuffed-into-the-edges-of-things that he does. it's a whole different mythology, but it just makes sense. "don't play for money at your own home -- you don't want the cards to know where you live"... sure, i can see the logic there. buying and selling luck? yeah, makes sense. parts of the structure and flow of the book are similar to "declare" and "expiration date", but not so similar as to be formula.

movies:
saw "murderball". frickin awesome. my favorite parts were actually small bits tangential to the main storyline: the guy sitting in the rugby wheelchair for the first time, suddenly wanting to roll around and hit things (*tap*), and the looks on the faces of the kids (and my god, they're kids) at the army rehab hospital at the end.

saw "charlie and the chocolate factory". i liked it. i could do without the tacked-on wonka family angst, but overall it was good. depp's a freak, the kid is just as adorable as he was in "neverland", and i really hope the oompa-loompa had as much fun as it looked like he was having.

tv:
BSG good.

"threshold" (new alien-invasion show starring the mom from the "spy kids" movies and brent spiner, among others)... has promise but hasn't quite managed to live up to it yet. a couple of cool creepy moments were offset by some painfully obvious "look, over there, BOO!" moments and some really annoying product placement.

also finally got around to skimming thru a PBS show on broadway musicals the tivo had recorded a few months ago. there were a number of fun excerpts. some were from video/film of the actual productions or backstage or even while the cast recording was being filmed, while some were from tony awards performances. I keep being surprised that bob fosse didn't actually look like roy scheider (who played him in fosse's roman a clef autobiography "all that jazz" -- leave it to fosse to choreograph a film depiction of his own death.[1]) also, footage of a much younger jerry orbach, both in "chicago" and "42nd street". nobody can snark about allentown like jerry orbach.

[1] if you've seen "bring it on" (yes, the cheerleader movie. it's fun, honest.), the sparky pulaski character is a total riff on scheider's "all that jazz" fosse character, complete with the pill-popping. and if you've seen the video for paula abdul's "cold hearted snake", it's clearly inspired by the "take off with us" number from "all that jazz".

I'm interested to see where Threshold goes. Some parts of the pilot were painfully obvious - like any time they showed Ethan, er Cruise's cousin, er Gunneson, not to mention the very last scene. Some of the writing was clunky.

And yet, I want to see where it goes.

And, dammit, I STILL want to see Murderball. And now it's playing further and further from us. Maybe I'll have to wait until it's out on DVD.

If you liked Expiration Date and Last Call, I would stay away from Earthquake Weather, it's a sort of clumsy attempt to fuse the two worlds.

Though you'd think a fiber optic transceiver in the wrist would be a darn easy thing to test for.

Did you watch Supernatural? SO OVER THE TOP WITH OOZING CHEEZINESS. I'm such a titty-baby I had nightmares after Threshold.

All That Jazz is one of my all-time favourite films. Naturally, I have a copy on laserdisc.

me too!

unfortunately, my LD player is behaving kind of wonkily lately. i need to find someone locally who's familiar with them and see if they can figure out if it's repairable.
