i spent much of yesterday taming entropy in the house (cleaning, sorting thru and dealing with mail/bills, doing pre-tax paperwork sorting thru recpts and such), which was wonderful -- i feel a bit more coherent here now. probably more to be done today -- i'm in that mode where i look around for the bit of clutter or dirt or chaos that pisses me off the most, deal with it, then find the next one and deal with that.

claudia and i were going to hit costco but failed in that mission when it turned out they closed at 6pm on saturdays, not 8:30pm. i did have fun doing donuts in the unplowed part of the parking lot there, tho. then we went off to a farewell party for a couple skipping the country and heading to her great white northern homeland. any thoughts of party hopping were pretty much fizzled when i realized it was after midnight by the time we headed out. plus when we were walking back to my car, i had one of the most graceful falls-on-the-ice i've managed this season -- i lost my footing on my foreward foot as i was walking and skidded that foot straight out and i went down until i was kneeling on one leg but otherwise upright. still, my knee's a bit sore today. i'll probably ice it for a while today and i'll have to hunt down some tylenol since i'm temporarily on drugs that don't mix well with pretty much the entire class of NSAIDs.

today is yet another gorgeous day, and somehow i'm still somehow avoiding the Lake Offhand effect where melting snow and slush settle on the downhill side of the street (that is to say, my side) and build up between the two big snowbanks on either side of my driveway.

books finished:
  • "adrift" by steve callahan, who spent 76 days adrift on the ocean, crossing most of the atlantic in a liferaft after his boat sank.
  • "the story of rats", non fiction about rats and how we and they interact
  • "kitchen confidential" by tony bourdain (actually, listened to this as an audiobook read by bourdain). interesting and funny book about his life as a cook and chef.

now i'm on to "shadow divers" about divers who found a WWII U-boat off the coast of NJ (i have this as an audiobook) and "sister of the road: the autobiography of boxcar bertha" (not a real autobiography) about hoboes in the early 20th century
