if you haven't played with the rasterbator you might want to take a look -- feed it a picture and it spits out a rasterized image in pdf format all set to print out on bunches of paper. [EDIT: feed it a picture and it spits out a halftone image which it inaccurately describes as a raster image. otoh, this way they get to call it a "rasterbator", which amuses me.]
which reminds me -- i don't think i ever linked to this web app for turning images into patterns for cross-stitch, knitting, crochet, sticking post-its to windows, or other big-pixel-display media of your choice: knitPro
