I don't think I posted about this when it came out. A bunch of folks have done an awesome thing: a complete re-work of the original Half Life (up through the teleport to Xen) in the HL2 graphics engine. Valve nominally did this as "half life: source", but it was really crappy and used the same actual graphics and textures so it had GIANT BLOCKY PIXELS going on. This, on the other hand, is gorgeous. It's very close to the original - it diverges in a few places - most confusingly, you get the crowbar slightly later than in the original HL so I was wandering around for a while trying to figure out where the hell my crowbar the first time I played.
The trailer is here and the game can be found at blackmesasource.com.

a couple of things are a bit harder than in the original HL. I admit, I turned on cheat codes in a few places because I was more interested in moving through the game and looking at the pretty rather than making sure I beat this or that thing. but overall, but fun.

Even more awesome than that. Just in time for Arisia and January in general (apparently, January is PEAK NOROVIRUS TIME), Carl Zimmer writes about Noro in NatGeo.
