an unfamiliar-to-me neighbor cat has started hanging out on the back rear porch of my house. it seems fine -- if i come near it it gets up and scurries off. but i'm unclear why it's decided to hang on my porch. there's no food out there. but it seems happy and healthy so what the heck.

also, work is getting more interesting. or at least my management chain just got a bit bigger as my corporate overlords will soon have corporate overlords.

I have a neighbor cat who's like that. He used to be an indoor city cat (Manhattan, no less), and then his owner dumped him on her parents, who are my next door neighbors. The outdoors is new and different to him, and he quickly figured out that the area around my house offers the best combination of safe and interesting: woods, critters, gardens, a shed full of stuff, a porch, an outside staircase to climb, windows to jump in and out of...lots of stuff to explore and plenty of places to retreat from the dogs. Mind you, this cat won't come over to me, but he'll hang out near me. He's nice, but we're still establishing certain no-go zones (no, you may not sit in the gardens, at least not until the plants are all up and flourishing; no, you may not pee on the porch; etc.).

On the Sallie Mae acquisition, does that mean all those stock options will finally be worth something (as they were not for M the 6 years he was there)?

We saw (presumably) that kitty on the back porch when we returned your magic carpet cleaning thingy a week or so ago, so he's been hanging around at least that long. He might well be interested in your pussy collective. Ours are also spayed, but still attract admirers/rivals.

interesting.

he stopped hanging around for about a day after i moved some things off the porch (a bag of recycling, in this case), and so i thought i'd damaged the feng shui of the spot or something, but he was back.

i'm fighting the urge to put some rags in a little cardboard box so it can have a comfier spot to curl up.

Giving in to that urge might facilitate putting out a little bit of food and a water dish, then eventual pettins, and finally ++cats...

EDZ and I had a back porch cat when we first lived in Mountain View. Two of them, in fact; a solid black one and a black and white one that we nicknamed the "Holstein Kitty". They appeared together as kittens; we suspect that they had been somebody's Christmas gift, and were abandoned by Valentine's Day.

Anyway, we took to feeding and watering them on our back porch, and E undertook to tame them (I like cats, but I'm allergic to them). The black one disappeared within a few months, probably to a bad end, but the Holstein Kitty kept coming around. Finally he reached an age where we decided it would be a good idea to take him to the vet to be fixed. The vet gave us a collar and tag to put on him, with our address and phone number on it. We put them on him, and turned him loose again without giving it much thought.

By the end of the week, there were 4 more name/address tags on his collar. Apparently the little mooch had been hanging out on many back porches throughout the neighborhood, and everybody thought he was "their" cat. We all got a good laugh about it.

clever mooching kitty!

wait, i hope this didn't mean the poor cat got neutered 4 times. once can be traumatic enough, you know.
