bah. my tivo appears to have toasted itself. i assume it's the drive(s). i had the GSOD (green screen of doom) the other morning, so i let it sit all day and then overnight and now it's stuck in a cycle where it restarts, gets the GSOD after a few moments of the "wait a few more moments" screen, then sits at the GSOD for a while and restarts. lather rinse repeat.

there's only one thing on the tivo that is functionally irreplacable, and honestly, it serves me right for not dumping it to tape/cd/dvd/whatever before this.

i'm letting the tivo cool for a while to see if it's capable of coming back long enough to grab the one or two things i want from it.

next up, investigating INSTACAKE.

edited to add: also, WHERE THE FUCK ARE MY TORX BITS?

I gotta tell you, I love the DVR we got thru Comcast. 14.75/month, I never have to deal with crap hardware, took 10 minutes to install, even with our hard to reach cables, and it does everything I need.

yeah, appliances are great. one of the reasons i'm not thinking about a myth-tv box is that i want minimal effort involved.

i've got a lifetime (of the box, not me) tivo service subscription, so there's no recurring cost. and it's provider-agnostic. so it's worth a bit of effort to try and get the tivo live again.

I can see how that would be worth it, but the lifetime no longer exists.Once that's gone I can't see how tivo can compete against comcast this way. 12$/ month for service plus buying a box with a 3year average lifespan vs. 14.75$/ month for rental and service makes Comcast the obvious win to me.

Instantcake worked like a champ for me. Drop a net card in your Tivo while you're at it, it makes it trivial to archive stuff off. I now have a script that automatically pulls stuff off my Tivo, transcodes it, and puts it up on the web for me to watch via PC. The networked Tivo isn't even hooked to a TV anymore.

i've actually got a net card in the tivo. i love being able to sit at work and say "hey, what can i watch tonite?" and find out immediately. in fact, my first sign something was wrong was that i couldn't connect to the tivo via web even tho it answered pings.

how are you archiving stuff off the tivo via net?

I'm using a thing called ETivo, which is a service that runs on a Windows box.

What on earth is instacake? I suspected it involved making cake from a mix, but another comment made me think I was wrong.

Sometimes a Tivo that's botched a software update will do what you're describing. I have no idea if they're doing updates right now... we have a DirecTivo and DirecTV has been complete bastards about (not) providing software updates... we still don't even have folders on ours! :-( But we do have HDTV and glorious video quality, so that makes up for it a bit (and our cable system is crap and doesn't even come to our house, so DirecTV or Dish Network are really our only good TV providers).

I hadn't heard of Instacake... that's good to know... good luck!

What did you lose? maybe one of us has it on our tivo and can record it to DVD for you ...

*hugs*

unlikely. several years ago, claudia had 2 of her 15 minutes of fame on the nightly news as part of a brief interview.

as i say, serves me right for not actually archiving it before this.

Try hooking the drive to another computer and see if you can copy the file off.
There's software to allow this sort of thing, but I think most of it runs only on
winblows. I had to pull a few rabbits out of hats once to save [livejournal.com profile] fizzygeek's
recordings from a dying TiVo.
