bah. my tivo appears to have toasted itself. i assume it's the drive(s). i had the GSOD (green screen of doom) the other morning, so i let it sit all day and then overnight and now it's stuck in a cycle where it restarts, gets the GSOD after a few moments of the "wait a few more moments" screen, then sits at the GSOD for a while and restarts. lather rinse repeat.

there's only one thing on the tivo that is functionally irreplacable, and honestly, it serves me right for not dumping it to tape/cd/dvd/whatever before this.

i'm letting the tivo cool for a while to see if it's capable of coming back long enough to grab the one or two things i want from it.

next up, investigating INSTACAKE.

edited to add: also, WHERE THE FUCK ARE MY TORX BITS?

Instantcake worked like a champ for me. Drop a net card in your Tivo while you're at it, it makes it trivial to archive stuff off. I now have a script that automatically pulls stuff off my Tivo, transcodes it, and puts it up on the web for me to watch via PC. The networked Tivo isn't even hooked to a TV anymore.

i've actually got a net card in the tivo. i love being able to sit at work and say "hey, what can i watch tonite?" and find out immediately. in fact, my first sign something was wrong was that i couldn't connect to the tivo via web even tho it answered pings.

how are you archiving stuff off the tivo via net?

I'm using a thing called ETivo, which is a service that runs on a Windows box.
