in boring stray cat updates, it's been a few days since i saw the mooch-cat. i hope it's okay. i was just on the back porch swapping laundry around and i poked my head outside to say hello to her and discovered the critter on the back porch at the moment is a possum, not a cat. at least it's not a rat like i thought it might be when i pattern matched on the tail in the dark.

Um...be careful of rabies. There is a great deal of it in small mammals in Massachusetts, most notoriously skunks and raccoons, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's showed up in possums too. Make sure all your critters are up on their shots, and watch for any odd behavior in this wild critter (it ought to be afraid of you and run from you).

true! but "gee, i looked for the stray cat and found a possum" is kind of boring. :-)

oh yeah. my critters are indoor-only but i keep them up to date just in case.

the possum looked like he was just a plain old possum. sniffing around looking for food. i opened the door a crack and took a picture of him and he got a little freaked after the flash and waddled on over to another part of the back porch.

yeah, i tend to be wary of small mammals, particularly if they're showing up where i don't expect them.
