Eh. I dunno. I watched "A Bridge Too Far" too many times to automatically assume that something attached to a bridge is just a harmless piece of viral marketing. Embarrassing day in Boston? You're not hearing from the authorities in New York or LA or Seattle that "Oh, yeah, we saw those, we assumed it as just a harmless piece of viral marketing," are you? I think you have to work to make the case that the Boston authorities were dumb, whereas the idiocy of the morons who approved the campaign and put the stuff there is well established.

There are reasons to be embarrassed from every angle, though.

Even accepting the notion that these things should have been treated as threats - they were there for two weeks before people started their panic response to them.

Until the news broke, had anyone (in a uniform) outside of Boston even noticed them? That's what's still unclear, and conveniently ignored in the rush to portray the entire population of Boston as a pack of paranoid idjits.

yeah, i'm finding reasons to be embarassed by just about every side.

it sounds like the cops did their thing as well as they could. (i try not to blame the rank and file for dealing with the direction from folks higher up.) if they have to mobilize on a possibly-live-fire exercise, i'm glad it's something ultimately safe.

(Having just stolen and found the source, if you care, the icon was made by [livejournal.com profile] jedi.)

If you watched any of the evening coverage, there were folks with posters of that icon standing around outside the courthouse.

They made it onto a couple different channels.
