shiny new dvd recorder showed up today.

i have hooked it up to the laserdisc player, and have begun the great "dump ld to dvd" project. right now, i'm just recording the raw laserdiscs, without bothering to try and edit out the "a->b" disc transition. i figure i can rip the dvds onto a hard drive and edit that out later. right now, i just want to get them preserved into a more easily readable format than laserdisc.

between my own LDs and ones i've gotten from other folks for free or cheap, i've got a pretty big pile of old movies, here. it'll be good to have them on more easily watchable media.

Have you tried to play any of the DVDs yet? I'd be a little worried that Macrovision might shoot you in the foot.

doesn't seem to be a worry.

as i understand it, the laserdisc format doesn't support macrovision. in my more conspiratorial moments, i wonder if that contributed to its demise. :-)

It's been years since I used an LD but I'm pretty sure that I remember them supporting Macrovision... they didn't want you to be able to make tapes of them. I think it's more a function of the player than the format but I could definitely be wrong.

Anyway, I'm glad you're rescuing your LD's! We still have a few sitting around that I don't think will ever make it to DVD.
