everybody who voted "ear infection"... YOU'RE WRONG.

apparently, the stabbing pain in my ear is referred pain from the roof of my mouth, where i have a big old blister. so now i have, among other things, some valtrex (for the cold sores) and possibly the weirdest medication i've ever taken, anaesthetic mouthwash. i just tried it the first time, and i'm thinking i may switch to direct application with a qtip instead of swishing it around in my mouth, so that i'll feel a little less like i've just come from the dentist's office.

wow, between that and the lack of a uvula... oh nevermind :)

er, the lack of uvula did change certain things, i'll say that much.

but the numbing stuff would just take the fun out of it for everyone, i'd think.

as treatment for sleep apnea, i had my tonsils and uvula removed. basically, they roto-rootored my throat with a coring machine.

i am now physically incapable of making the snore noise, and i can easily go a weekend without my cpap machine (after a week, i start feeling it, since i'm not sleeping ideally but certainly better than i used to without the machine).

yes, it radically changed my gag reflex.

that is so totally cool.

is this a common thing to do for sleep apnea? i know a number of people on machines for it, and never heard of doing this.

I didn't say ear infection, I was MUCH more creative.

Hold still, this will only hurt a lot.

Well, I'm glad you went to the doctor. I had vague intentions of following up your previous post with all sorts of gross dental conjecture, now I don't have to!

Feel better soon!

Aha.

The last time I thought I had an ear infection, it turned out it was a rotten wisdom tooth.

OK I'm the one. Although sounds like popping a couple amoxicillin might be preferable to this prescription.

Ah, saw this after I sent email to you.
The mouthwash sounds bizarre. Is it helpful?

*hugs*

yeah. i was able to dine without pain which was a nice change.

although after trying it as a swish-around-then-spit mouthwash, i think i'm going to try direct application with a qtip (followed by spitting) or something like that instead next time. while having the ouchy parts of my mouth not ouchy means i can drink and eat more easily, the whole "i can't feel my tongue" makes me worry about biting it. and really, that's not good for anyone. so perhaps a bit more precision in application next time.

Is this H2O2 mouthwash or something worse?

Glad you found out what was wrong!

Well, yay for no ear infection, then. :-} But boo on painful blisters and stuff.

I had a similar situation: pain in my throat so bad it was like razor blades scraping my adam's apple whenever I swallowed. I was sure it was strep, but it turned out to be clod sore blisters that had erupted in my gullet. Ow and yuck!

At least it's not a tumah!
