The thing I found interesting were the numbers of lesbian multi-racial couples from the southern states. As far as any of my southern relatives are concerned any of the two options are just the devil incarnate, and I bet seeing the two mixed together in one happy belle lump would cause my relative's heads to explode in apoplexy.
This just fills me with joy, irrespective of any particularly neolithic school boards. When I was in high school, even in nice liberal Lexington, same-sex couples going to the prom would have been unthinkable (or, at least, a moderately big deal). Now here are students from literally all over the country doing just that, and it's not a big deal at all.
The very first lesbian couple who came out at my school (at least, the only ones in my year) did it mere weeks before senior prom, to which they then went. It didn't make a big stir, but it was mostly because the two women involved were considered pretty kooky, not because it wasn't a generally big deal.
Also: as a side note, one of the women *had* been going to go to prom with a good friend of mine, who she ditched for the woman. He wasn't thrilled (he wound up going alone) but he was pretty nice about it.
Closets are not good for anyone and it's great that fewer and fewer kids have to face them coming up. It does make me sad that some of them still have to fight tooth and claw for their rights and milestones, but I'm glad they are out there fighting.

Date: 2010-03-15 09:50 pm (UTC)i was (happily) weirded out about 10 years ago when i found out my high school had a gay/straight alliance.
and now... now it's just a thing, many places.
i am so pleased that much of my worldview-from-upbringing is just making me like a dinosaur in some ways.
