I've been lurking on craftster for a while, and they always do crafty-swaps, usually around a theme (recently someone called for a scifi swap, and I almost de-lurked).

I would always be concerned about my inability to complete things, but I love the idea of lovingly making something for someone else, especially if I already know that they want it (or at least that they want something I am capable of making).

metafilter does swaps of stuff sometimes. i did a cd swap a year or two ago, and this past christmas i was part of the mefi secret santa (aka "secret quonsar") where i totally scored -- the person i was supposed to gift to (who lived in nyc) mentioned somewhere on site that she loves things that are handmade and things that are blue. i happened to be working on a blue crocheted hat, so i finished it up quick and sent it to her and she got it just as nyc went into a deep freeze. i win at timing!

i actually found out about swap-bot because someone mentioned it today in a metatalk discussion of a possible postcard swap.
