So, I've got a couple of BPA-laden quart bottles. And I was staring at them trying to think of what to do with them, and I had a bit of inspiration. Both have now been stuffed full of things and are now transformed into a pair of emergency kits for the scenario "The car went off the road and I have to spend a night in the woods." One for the mini, one for the truck. Each has an emergency blanket, a bandanna, some cord, a whistle, a small sharp knife, weatherproof matches, some zip lock bags, etc.

Back when I lived in Seattle and would occasionally drive through areas far more remote than are found in MA, I had a fair bit of stuff stored in the truck that could set me up for, basically, impromptu camping. Happily, I never had to use it while stranded east of the Cascades or something, but I felt good knowing it was there. Most of that cruft has diffused out of the truck and very little of it collected in the Mini, either. So I'm pleased to have nice compact batch of useful stuff to toss in both vehicles. It's not zombie-apocalypse levels of preparedness, but it'll do for a far more common scenario.

Read that as "Bin Laden quart bottles" first time through.

I have a "emergency kit" that I bought in Restoration Hardware (on sale) many years ago in the back. It has all the bare necessities (tarp, string, knife, survival guide, candle, matches, etc) in this TINY box. Then I have my plastic bin which has a blanket, a proper tarp, bungee cords, ratcheting ties and so on in it. I had in mind that either...I'd get stuck in a snowstorm and need to stay warm or...I might stop at the beach for a picnic sometime! Either way, I'm set.

Oh, and a small kite. If there's a snowstorm and my car gets buried, I figured I'd be able to fly it above and let people know I'm there. If the beach, well, Hey, a KITE!

That's some really big smarts you got there, babe! I think I might do up a couple of those for our vehicles, too. Thanks for the (hopefully not, but potentially lifesaving) idea!

That sounds useful. I should do something like that (we have a first aid kit in the truck, but it's for equestrian emergencies (though it probably can be used on humans)). At least both cars have safety triangles.

I'd probably add some sugar cubes or hard candies.
