i am setting up a firewall in my cube here at work to muck about with. so i need an address space behind it. i don't have a good grasp of what rfc1918 space is and is not routed in tufts, so i used an address range out of a public ip space i knew wasn't being publicly routed: 128.127.0.0/16, which is the old ftp software class B network. it's not routed as far as i can tell (checking looking glass servers out there) and in fact i'm pretty sure the address space is lying fallow with no live organization listed as the owner of the space, ready to be reclaimed when iana starts actually doing that.

It's been a long time, but I thought that the 128.0.0.0 addresses were reclaimed so they could use the high bit for something.

I thought it was just reclaimed to be handed out to other folks. The only thing I could find is that RIPE has the delegation for it now. I don't know what they're doing with it, though.

looks like they are indeed doing that. For one thing I see that the old Stanford University class A net (36.*.*.*) has just been assigned to APNIC as of October 2010.

... slowly. Figure it was sometime in the late '80s when Stanford gave up those addresses (I was there for the conniption/mass-renumbering, even if at the time I didn't really get what it was all about...); sort of amazes me how there's been this huge panic about vanishing IP4 space and those 16 million addresses have just been sitting there for 20 years.

That was a pretty awesome prefix for us to have. I'd forgotten what it was.
