One of the things I've taken to doing is occasionally checking out projects listed as "Ending Soon" on Kickstarter. There's some self-indulgent crap, some stuff that looks potentially interesting to people who aren't me, and some stuff that's flat out neat. (Some things I've thrown money at include trebuchet kits, an attempt to make an autonomous transatlantic boat, Shakespeare in the park, and an album from Crime and the Forces of Evil.) (actually, a couple of those I found out about via other channels than the 'ending soon' page. but still).

Besides helping to fund random projects, Kickstarter seems to be a good way for small-scale manufacturers to sell product ahead of incurring production costs. As an example, one project that's ending soon that I'm pointing out for photography types is a lens-cap holder to attach your camera's lenscap to your camera strap. Donors get lenscaps.

yeah, this.
i've never understood why everyone doesn't just have a lenscap tether for each lens.

For the most part, it serves a problem that I don't have. Plus, I don't think I'd like a lens cap dangling from the camera.

I suspect the "right" product would be a pouch that goes on the camera's strap. It could be made one-size-fits-most, and keep the cap mostly out of the way. OTOH, I've only ever once lost a lens cap, and that involved my dropping it into the bay while putting it on.
