I've updated the wifi in my house. There's now a guest network that - for the moment - has a password on it. The guest network is named "offhandguest" and the password for it is "offhandguest" (without the quotes).

I may drop the authentication for it later, when I've got filtering set up better, but for now, it's got a token bit of auth on it.

Keeping a password, even if it's trivial to guess, is probably a good idea; unless things have broken more than I've heard, it keeps client hosts from being able to (trivially) snoop on each other.

For parties, however, I still try to set up a (DMZ-based) network with no password.

Thanks! I have a T-mobile data stick to use in my studio, but it sucks donkeys for service. Mostly that's fine, I just need to check my email, but if something happens that I need to deal with, it's good to know I can wander over to your carport or something. (Plus, I've almost run out of rags in studio! Time for me to pick up those shirts :-).

What hardware setup did you wind up going with?

airport extreme. so far my only complaint is that you're somewhat restricted in IP addressing in the 10 space. They give you a drop-down list with some rfc1918 prefixes, and the 10 one is 10.0/16. (I had previously used 10.2.2.0/24, so I had to readdress some stuff.)
