I'm feeling really *really* fed up and burned out by misogyny right now. Part of it is the political season, with candidates saying remarkably stupid things and having them publicized and feeling powerless as it seems that the culture of my country is shifting. Part of it is the slow burn of sexism (and discussion of it) getting more prominent online, at least in many/most of the places online that I frequent.

If I snap and start engaging in normally-inexplicable levels of radical disruptive behavior any time soon, this will be why.

Gah yeah.

At least the President is finally saying good unambiguous things about reproductive rights.

Crap. Hm. Can you cut yourself off from news for the next two weeks. People are currently in the state called "fuck-ass stupid", and it will continue for a few weeks tops.

Think of them as weak and briefly mentally defective. Or you could use this stupidity and rip them off. Ah, better idea: Rip them off as much as humanely possible. It's necessary to help them learn.

Start.... now... Bob Dobbs approved advice.

Unfortunately, it's not just the news. It's even in my tech stuff (http://adainitiative.org/2012/10/open-source-software-open-to-all/).

If I could figure out a way to rip them off for it, I would definitely consider it.

If you need an alibi for anything rage related, you were with me having tea the whole time.

Seriously, some days I just want to throw my hands up in the air and go "fuck allya, I'm out"

Meh. Yes, I htink it's more and more prevalent online. And I also think that what that means is that it's more and more prevalent online.

It might also mean other things, but I find that whenever the misogyny gets me down, if I go out in to the world and interact with actual people, I feel much better. One person, or half a percent of people on a comment thread can fill the place up with stinky shit, and it's too easy to feel like the world has gotten that way. but I think the nature of comment threads is that if they're not moderated the nasty people carry the day. Don't read the comments on the Internet. Also, send me email with a night you're free for dinner.

If it were just online, I think it would be easier to deal with. But, man, with election season and it getting extra stupid out there, there's a lot of misogyny that comes with that, too. It just feels like it's everywhere, lately. It'll pass, but still, yow.

And, yeah, will do.

Honestly, I wish more women would go ballistic

because I totally feel like someone needs to get rage-y about this shit and as a white cis-male I'm kind of back of the line for this. I want there to be more outrage and frankly I think there needs to be a segment of the population (like, oh, 53%?) that's willing to stand up and say "this is not acceptable as part of our civil and social discourse."

But I also need not to be trampling over the speech of those most affected. So I sit on my hands a lot and wish fervently for more of the people (women) affected to get their rage on.

Tina Fey (http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/10/25/tina-fey-rips-grey-faced-men-with-2-haircuts-defining-rape/) made a good start. "And if I have to listen to one more gray-faced man with a two-dollar haircut explain to me what rape is, I’m gonna lose my mind!"

About time. I'm grateful he is, but seriously he should have long ago... (I will note our family has donated more money to his campaign than a sensible person would probably say we can afford, because fuck but we are all screwed if he loses. That doesn't mean I don't think he could have been clearer in his support for reproductive rights from the beginning.)

I take hope that I managed to convince one of our writers that his use of his/her in our help text was both inappropriate and sexist. He couldn't understand it, he said. He thought he was being more appropriate. And I had to insist that being gender neutral was genuinely the most appropriate way of dealing and that whether the reader was male or female didn't affect our product in any way.

So...one small step for humankind there.

It's just getting inescapably apparent that, er, no, feminism wasn't actually done yet, i.e. the price of being treated like women are actually human is eternal vigilance. And you know, damn, I really fucking thought we'd settled this 30 years ago.

I don't think it's just online. People on the internet are still people. If they say it, they think it, in real life, too. I've never had any trouble identifying what someone shows me is true about themselves online. And for more and more people, other than Just Us, the internet is now real life as much as going to work.

Also, if you struck up conversations with random people on the street (and who aren't already in your circle of friends / acquaintances) about the things that are in the news... you'll find that a whole LOT of them think things that marginalize the hell out of you. But we don't really talk to strangers about that stuff. We limit our interactions to "thanks, have a nice day, see you next week" and we don't dig deep.

Chalk me up as another woman who believes that this can't be laid at the feet of online "culture" or the Presidential campaign. Those are the media through which the culture's attitudes express themselves.

I think what's really needed is more solidarity, more people speaking out against it and supporting others who speak out, not just giving silent (therefore unheard) approval. People get tired when they speak out against some kind of oppression, and the only responses come from the barbarians speaking more barbarities. People get tired fast when they aren't supported; they get energized when they are supported. We need a lot more "Fuck yeah, that's right" from each other and for each other.
