So, I woke up this morning and ended up thinking about what it would take to set up a portable set-up that would let me drive my truck somewhere and be a "community charging station" for people to charge phones/laptops/etc if there were a prolonged outage in this area.

For my own use, I could probably cobble somethign together based off my power boombox, in particular so as to keep my sump pump running in my basement.

I guess ideally I'd want an interver (this model includes a battery charger), at least one deep cycle battery, and a battery isolator for hooking it up to my car or truck without fucking up said vehicle. Assorted wires and connectors.

Not a bad idea. I might end up wanting to set something like that up as a UPS for my sump pump, actually.

I really like (and own) this one

http://www.amazon.com/Cobra-CPI1000-1000W-Power-Inverter/dp/B00126AR40/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1351878651&sr=8-5&keywords=cobra+inverter

Really nice, turns off for low voltage, and starts anything I have. And $80 bucks, good buy

I think something like http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Three-Way-Car-Cigarette-Lighter-Socket-Splitter/5196091/product.html and some charging cables would be better.

An inverter with power adapters sounds much less efficient.

Yeah those things are wicked cool

I forget the source, but I was recently reading about how someone used a car+inverter to power some fairly critical machinery for some elder folk.

Here's a picture from one portable charging station out from Burning Man last year. Might give you some additional ideas -

The first two is essentially what gave us power during Irene at Hunter Mountain. One of the guys brought his festival camping setup into a hotel room and basically charged everything that wasn't mine (I charged phone / ipad / laptop / wireless router in my nini-van with my own inverter setup) for 4 people including a small fridge and keeping a television going trying to get news of the world.
