So, Roman Catholicism just got interesting. The pope quit.

I'm no longer a Catholic, but I was raised Catholic, so I'm a bit boggled by this. Should be interesting.

One of my favorite responses so far has been Rose Fox tweeting "Thanks to all my nerdy friends, I now understand that the Pope resigning is like a BOFH giving up root access."

I wonder if they'll manage to find someone less radical and progressive to replace him.

Given that at least half the current crop of cardinals were appointed by Popetine, I'm sure there are plenty of less radical and progressive cardinals available for the job.

My theory is that he's retiring rather than dying in office so that he can directly control who replaces him.

OK, that's funny.

I've never seen so many "This comment has been Removed" before on Boston.com.
must have gotten pretty nasty in there.

poor guy. Honestly it's hard to imagine how he goes on from here.

He gets a cushy suite in the Vatican and gets to keep his hand in the politics without doing any of the work. Pretty sweet....

Speculation is that they'll select someone from the same mould, since he appointed a vast number of the current Cardinals who'll be doing the voting.

I was raised Catholic too. I'm not quite as bitter about it as say, Christopher Hitchens... quite. But still, I find the politics of the Catholic Church and the intrigue of the conclave utterly fascinating. Part of me secretly hopes they name Bernard Law, just to watch the fireworks. Okay, maybe I am as bitter as Hitchens.

Not being Catholic, I can't begin to imagine "bitter" as a reaction. Really? Why on earth?

my therapist and i had a funny conversation about the pope a few months ago.

e: there's nothing about the pope that makes me want to cozy up to him.
me: i don't think he would want to cozy up to you either.
e: (frowning) then i don't like him.
me: because you'd make him have evil thoughts.
e: (big smile) then i like him!

amber speculates that the pope may have been having evil thoughts about e :)

1) Best quote about it so far was along the lines of "setting the bar awful high for giving up something for Lent."

2) Well, they are due to start filming Star Wars VII soon...
